No - I did not start off high school thinking humanities or international affairs would become one of my favorite subjects. In fact, I began Model UN my freshman year wanting to learn about the world and its different peoples, but I have come to gain much more knowledge and perspective than this through my four years in the club. This organization has taught me critical thinking, communication and debate skills, problem solving, and foreign policy through the lens of the United Nations framework. In Model UN at GSMST, I have built a family - one dedicated to understanding and brainstorming effective solutions to the world's problems while keeping in mind differing backgrounds and cultures. Above all, my love for potentially solving key issues affecting millions of lives drives me to lead this club, compete, and learn. While some of the largest issues of our times may seem worlds away, I believe it's our generation’s duty to understand and resolve them through international cooperation.

Model UN has truly been life changing for me. I have competed for three years now, and I am astounded by how much I have grown through my experiences. After each conference, I feel a sense of accomplishment after debating with similar minds about how we can solve the world’s most pressing issues. Model UN provides a climate of progress in which each and every one of us looks towards creating a better world. The interests and passions it has cultivated within me are ones I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Favorite quotation: "We must find light in the darkest of times."

When I entered high school, the notion alone of becoming accustomed to this strange place I would call my second home for the next four years was daunting. Yet, amidst the chaos of my freshman year, I found a quiet, but intelligent cove where, deceiving from its appearance, was anything but quiet. Model UN evolved to become something other than just another club for me. Instead, it became a haven where my friends and I could aspire to solve any problem the world was facing, practice expressing ourselves diplomatically, and share our thoughts on everyday issues. One could say Model UN is a club, but I would call it a family.

Who doesn't want to rule their own little part of the world for a bit? World domination aside, Model UN has given me an interest in international affairs, and to not only think domestically, but globally on the front of economics, human rights, national security, etc. Not only an educational experience, it has given me opportunities to practice public speech and the fine art of negotiation, all with a great dose of fun.
Favorite quotation: "People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly...timey wimey...stuff." -Tenth Doctor
Maria Olifer: Junior Officer

I wanted to join Model UN ever since the beginning of middle school, but I never thought that a club could impact my life so much. Model UN has allowed me to fuel my competitive nature by debating global problems with people who never stop looking for solutions. It has helped me become a better thinker, public speaker, and leader. Every Model UN conference has provided me with a new way to view the world and see it from a different perspective. Most importantly, it has led me to finding a family of people with whom I can discuss everything from international dilemmas to everyday things and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

yourself. Life is about creating yourself." -George Bernard Shaw

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the words Model UN is a picture of our club members. This picture is specifically from my first conference at Georgia Tech. Everyone was a little nervous but so excited during the bus ride to this conference. As I was observing everyone on that bus, I just felt that this was the group of people that I wanted to spend my time with while doing the things that I love. Even though this was during the beginning of the school year, I loved the energy, the rules, and especially the people I was going on this journey with. No, these people weren’t extremely funny or something exceptional. They were quirky, down-to-earth, and just...my kind of people. I love our family and I love watching us all grow in our skills. I’m looking forward to the next 3 years of my life in this fabulous club, surrounded by these members!

Model UN has been a blessing for me this year! I am super excited for what's to come! I love history, so Model UN has given me a perspective of different nations, respecting their cultures and tradition...Model UN has and will continue to help me improve my speaking skills and have not fear when I speak. Throughout high school and hopefully college, I hope to become part of Model UN.
